Meditation Made Simple: 5 Easy Ways To Meditate

There are lots of different ways that you can use to meditate.

Each way has roughly the same result, it’s just a different way to reach that result. Much the same as you can probably change your route to work – you’ll reach your destination, possibly a bit slower or faster, but you’ll still reach your destination. Take a look at these easy meditation methods and choose the one that you prefer.

Walking meditation

This is an exceptionally easy way for you to meditate. Of course, you’ll be aware of what’s close by and what is going on around you. The beauty of a walking meditation is that you can use time that would otherwise be wasted. Plus no-one else need know that you’re meditating, which can be a benefit when you’re starting out. With a walking meditation, it’s a good time to pay attention to how you feel in yourself as well as what is near you. If you have a regular walk that’s around 15 to 20 minutes, that’s great. And even better if you can stay away from distractions such as the noise of traffic, although if you’re in a large city that may be easier said than done. If there’s a local park, choose that. Or a riverside walk may be worth exploring. Then take yourself for a gentle stroll. Make sure that you notice the noises and smells. And, of course, also pay attention to what you see. You may find yourself noticing the vivid colors around you for the first time.

Breathing meditation

A breathing meditation can be as easy or as difficult as you want. at its simplest, find yourself a quiet place where you’re likely to be undisturbed. Begin to take deeper breaths than normal. Breathe in long, slow, deep breaths. If you feel comfortable, hold in your breath for a short while before releasing it. After that, breathe slowly out. Repeat this a number of times – start with 5 or so repetitions and build up to more. This is an easy meditation that can be performed almost any place {and will leave your body more relaxed} and ready for the rest of the day.

Binaural beats meditation

Binaural beat meditations operate by playing two slightly different tones – one into each ear. They are usually disguised by music, natural sounds or anything else the author chooses. When your brain hears the two different tones, it is placed into a meditative state. The precise state will be a function of the frequency the binaural beats have been set at. So long as you know that the science going on in the background “works”, you don’t need to think much more about this. It’s fantastically simple and it’s the meditation method I personally use to reach a very deep state of meditation just by listening to an MP3 file for 30 or 60 minutes.

Cosmic meditation

This has become popular in the UK as broadcaster Noel Edmonds attributes his recent come-back to the process. It is also related to the Law of Attraction, popularized by the movie “The Secret”. Cosmic meditation involves reaching a meditative state and then asking the cosmos to “deliver” something into your life. You send your intention to the cosmos (whatever that intention is) and then put your focus elsewhere whilst you wait for your intention to be returned to you. Cosmic meditation usually takes the form of a guided meditation and is sometimes also referred to as Cosmic Ordering.

Guided meditation

A guided meditation can be performed in person or by listening to an MP3 audio file. There are lots of pre-recorded guided meditations available on the internet and places like Amazon. They cover all sorts of topics from general relaxation through to healing and contacting your higher self. Generally, a guided meditation will last for between 20 and 60 minutes. You’ll normally start with a relaxation period to help you get the best from your meditation session and it will then go on to whatever subject you’ve decided for this particular meditation. So if you’re playing a guided meditation to connect with your higher self, you’ll maybe be guided to fill your body with a bright white light or maybe some healing sand (which then drains out of your body, cleaning your body as it leaves). Each guided meditation is different – find someone who’s voice is good for you to listen to and follow them!

Different Postures of Meditation

Since ancient times, people have practiced meditation for the numerous benefits it offers. Practicing meditation as part of your daily routine might lead to improvements in your outlook and attitude.

Most forms of meditation call for the spine to be straight and the posture to be erect. The reason for this is that when you sit erect it promotes the circulation of your spiritual energy. This is considered to be your life force.

A straight back is essential to most of the meditation traditions, and is a standard component of the various postures used in this practice. Here’s a look at a few of them.

1. Seated posture. The individual sits upright while maintaining a straight back. Spine and head are aligned and straight. The thighs are parallel to the floor. The hands are placed on the arms of the chair or on the knees.

2. Cross legged position. This is one of the most popular positions, and includes the lotus position.

3. Kneeling position. The person is positioned with both knees resting on the floor. Buttocks remain resting on the heels and toes, which are close together. Hands rest on the thighs.

4. Lying down position. This is also called the corpse position or, in yoga, savasna. The person lies down on the floor keeping the legs unbent and at ease. This posture isn’t that common since it so closely resembles the sleeping position. A person might doze off at times. This is better as a means of reducing stress more so than for meditating.

In addition to these postures, there are several gestures and movements that can be incorporated into the practice of meditation. Among these are hand gestures called Mudras. A theological meaning is at the root of these gestures. Founded on the yogic school of thought, they might affect the consciousness. One illustration is the typical Buddhist hand placement. With the thumbs touching, the right hand is positioned on top of the left hand.

Integrating assorted repetitive actions like chanting, deep breathing or humming also assists in bringing on a state of meditation. There are also those who use walking meditation. Typically, the eyes are closed or partially closed during meditation. Those who practice Soto Zen meditation, however, do so with their eyes open looking at a wall.

To gain the benefits of meditation, follow the training of the type of meditation you have decided to practice. Be aware that persistence and acceptance are required to achieve success. This could be of help at times when you find difficulty in meditating, and it will also improve your concentration in daily life.
